What is gleaning? Well, let’s begin with the problem of food waste on farms. Some farm products are good but look imperfect. Farmers don’t usually try to sell them in markets. Many of them are left to rot in the fields. This is a great waste. And gleaning is about reducing this waste — by collecting the products.
These days, many volunteer groups go out gleaning in order to provide those in need with fresh, healthy food.
Holly’s group is one of them. Her volunteers collect about 300 boxes of food each week. Once, a local fruit farmer called Holly to ask for gleaning services. He had a large field with more than 700 fruit trees. A member of Holly’s group created an online map of the trees. With the help of the map, the volunteers quickly collected the fruit from the trees.
Besides this, Holly’s volunteers have also picked other vegetables from local farms. The food has been sent to food banks and community kitchens in her area.
Gleaning helps solve the problems of farm waste and food shortages (短缺). And gleaners also find the work brings them a sense of achievement. “We can get outside and do something good for the world,” said Holly. “I feel pleased whenever I go gleaning!”

Traditionally, tourists like to make use of every second of the day. They rush from one place to another. When they finally get to their hotel rooms at night, they often find it hard to sleep though they are tired. Most city hotels may be in the city centre. But it usually also means noisy traffic and bright streetlights. As a result, many people simply do not sleep well in these hotels.
To solve this problem, many hotels are offering special sleep suites (套间). These suites are made to provide quietness and darkness. Some hotels are even buying smart beds for these suites. They can not only help users relax their bodies but also record their sleep.
In addition, many hotels use other ways to help people sleep better. Some provide a menu of relaxing teas. Others offer services such as massages (按摩) after meals.
Some sleep scientists believe these sleep suites are a result of the pandemic (流行病) in the past three years. In those days, many people had trouble sleeping because of illness and worries. So after the pandemic, hotels have paid more attention to sleep problems.

Recently, our school has carried out a survey called “ To whom do you go when in trouble?” The results are as follows.
70% of the students choose to tell their classmates or friends about their problems. 20% of them choose teachers or parents to talk to. And 10% of the students don’t want to talk to anybody when they are in trouble.
I prefer to choose teachers as my ideal listeners, because they have rich experience in life and can give me much useful advice. Once, I had a fight with my friend. I felt very upset and told this to my head teacher. She comforted me and encouraged me a lot. I felt much better after talking to her. She also gave me some advice on how to get on well with others. From then on, when I’m in trouble, I like to ask my teachers for help.
