If a baseball is pitched at 85 miles per hour, and a batter(击球员)hits at 86 miles per hour, then the perfectly hit ball will travel about 450 feet.If the ball is pitched at 95 miles per hour, you can add another 10 feet,so the
perfectly hit ball will travel 460 feet.
If the batter pulls toward the foul line(边线)instead of dead centre(正中),the ball will pick up another 15
feet,Now you are at 475 feet.
On a hot,dry day, maybe at 100°F in July, the air is thinner and the ball can move faster,so add another 10 feet, for a total of 485 feet.Hot weather makes the ball more “lively,”which means it can go farther.Add another
10 feet for the lively ball and you are at 495 feet.
What if there is a 10 miles per hour wind behind the batter? Then the ball will go 40
more feet, and now the ball will travel 535 feet!
All those possibilities were thought out by scientists.Baseball players have accepted these beliefs, and they use them when they play and when they plan playing techniques. So no matter how skilful a player you are,
knowing more about science will help you know more about baseball!
31.What does the underlined word "pitched"in the first paragraph mean?
A.Caught. B.Kicked. C.Thrown.D.Passed.
32.According to the text, the distance a baseball travels is partially decided by

B.the quality of the ball used in the game
C.the height the ball reaches when it flies
D.the weight of the player pitching the ball
33.How much farther can the ball travel if there's a 10 miles per hour wind behind the batter?
A.10 feet B.40 feet. C.495 feet. D.535 feet.
34.Which of the following is the most suitable title for the text?
A.Where Can You Learn Baseball B.When Should You Play Baseball
C.What Do You Need for Baseball D.How Far Can You Hit a Baseball

Samantha, like many renters (房客),is tired of renting. One reason is that her rent goes up like clockwork.
Every year her landlord(房主)raises the rent five percent.Another reason is her neighbors.“New neighbors
always seem to think less about other people than the ones who moved out,"she said.My first neighbor always
closed the door heavily;I always knew when he came home or left home. After he moved out,a saxophonist (萨克
斯管吹奏者)moved in.A saxophonist! He practiced two hours a day.On Saturday his friends would come over and I'd get to listen to a whole band.I called the police, but they said saxophone playing is permitted in apartments for up to four hours a day, because saxophone playing is job-related.They told me I was lucky that the man was
only playing two hours a day!"
There are many unhappy renters, but there are also happy ones."Ive been lucky my whole life,"said Howard, a middle-aged man.“My neighbors couldn't have been any better if I had picked them myself. One neighbor was a cook. He'd bring me some delicious dishes.Another neighbor was a pianist. She played the most delightful music.
Another neighbor was a repair man who helped me with my car all the time and changed the oil in my car.My
latest neighbor is a birder;we go to the forest every weekend to watch birds.”
Different persons have different ways of looking at life.Samantha saw the saxophone player as a troublemaker, yet Howard saw the piano player as a happiness bringer.Millions of people would be happy just to have a roof over
their head.Yet there are millions who would be always saying that their roof is the wrong color.
35.What is a reason for Samantha being tired of renting an apartment?
A.Her landlord is impolite. B.The rent increases every year.

37.What does Howard do every weekend with his latest neighbor?
A.He learns cooking. B.He watches birds in the forest.
C.He listens to music.D.He goes out for a ride in his car.
38.What determines the feeling of happiness according to the text?
A.The way you look at life. B The profession you are in.
C.The people you stay with.D.The place where you live.
C
The city of Armada opened its arms to a new business on Huntington Drive at First Street. The store, called Turtle Dove,is a pet shop specializing in two kinds of animals. The owners are two brothers,Bill and Bob Pidgin. They moved here from the northern California town of Santa Rosa, where they owned a pet farm store called
Animal House. That store was such a success that after five years they sold it for big money.
They took it easy for a couple of years, travelling throughout the states."We visited almost every zoo in the country, partly because we love animals and partly because we were looking for something special for our next business,"said Bill. They finally decided on turtle(龟)and doves(鸽).“They're easy to feed and care for,and both
animals live a long time.”said Bob.
The store will be open from 9:00 a.m.to 9:00 p.m.Wednesdays through Saturdays.“We think those are hours that our customers will find very convenient.Besides, the three days off gives us a chance to go into the woods and find some special animals. We never buy our animals;we always try to catch them from the wild. That way we can
pass on huge savings to our customers. And,of course,by removing these animals from their natural living places,
we protect them from being devoured(吞食)by their natural enemies. So our customers are happy, our animals are
happy,and were happy.It's a win-win for all of us.”

In 1824,a Frenchman named Louis Braille invented a system of writing for blind people. This system, called Braille, uses patterns of raised dots to represent letters. The dots are punched (打孔)into the back of paper with a special tool called a stylus. When the paper is turned over, blind people can read by feeling the patterns with their
fingers.
Yet writing in Braille can be difficult because when a stylus is used to punch Braille dots into the back of paper, the letters have to be made from right to left so that they can be read from left to right when the paper is
turned over.
To solve this problem, inventors developed, throughout the 1930s and 1940s,the braillewriter -a machine like a typewriter that types Braille dots instead of letters.Keys punch the dots from the back of the paper to the front so that the paper doesn't have to be turned over. The words can be typed from left to right,in the same direction they
are read.
What if a blind person wanted to write something for a sighted(有视力的)person who didn't read Braille?
How could blind people write letters, reports, books, and newspaper articles for sighted readers?A solution to this
problem came in 1986 from a company named Tele Sensory.Tele Sensory inventors created MPRINT,a machine that links a braillewriter to an ink printer. As words are typed in Braille,MPRINT changes the Braille keystrokes (按键)into letters for the ink printer. This invention enables a blind person to write something in Braille and,at the
same time, produce a printed copy for sighted readers.
43.What is a stylus?
A.Atool that is used to punch Braille dots. B.A machine that is able to turn papers over.
C.A pattern of raised dots on a piece of paper. D.A writing system invented by Louis Braille.
44.What can a braillewriter do?
A.Read letters. B.Change the paper
C.Print articles. D.Type Braille dots.
45.What role does MPRINT paly in the communication between the blind and the sighted?
A.Director B.Monitor. C.Competitor: D.Translator.
